Marin Coast - Salmon

Friday 8/09/2002, After a long spell of no fishing and some vacation time I finally was able to get the boat out on the water. We decided to head up the Marin Coast to do some Salmon Fishing, John arrived at my house at 6:30am. After fueling up the Boat and Truck we headed over to Oyster Point to Launch. At 8:30am we finally got our lines in the water at Rocky Point at 8:30am and started trolling Apexes, about 9:30am we hooked on to our first Salmon of the year, nice size. We trolled from Rocky Pt to Duxbury Bouy and back and picked up another Salmon on the downhill and lost it at the boat due to some heavy head shaking by the salmon. That was on my pole and sure felt good after not hooking anything for awhile. We continued trolling till 3:30pm - 4pm and picked up 2 more Fish. Called it a day at 4pm and headed in. It was hot!!! We both were sunburned but happy to be on the water. It was a parking lot of boats as far as the eye could see from Muir Beach to Duxbury and the Stick Boats were everywhere on friday. We ended up with 4 Fish 1 lost at the boat and quite a few hits but no hook ups. We trolled from 25ft to as deep as 50-60ft, All caught on Silver, Watermelon, and Red Apexes. The ride back through the bay was terrible, we manged to stay dry all day until we came through the bay and hit Oyster Point and we were greeted by the infamous wind that plows through the San Bruno Mountains which kicks up the bay in the afternoon. Yep we got wet but it felt good considering it was hotter then heck!.

Saturday 8/10/2002, We did it again, John met me at the same time, this time we had a 3rd person on board (Kim, John's friend from San Jose) met us at the dock. Coming around Pt Bonita was Cold and the Fog was thick and the swells were a bit bigger, but flatten out and the sun broke through a mile out from Rocky Pt. We arrived at Rocky Pt at 8:30am and started trolling towards Duxbury, Using apexes and Rotary killers. We trolled till 12 Noon trying everything with no hits at all. The boat pressure was twice the amount it was the day before being it was the weekend and everyone and their brother was out there including the commercial guys. This time we had Fishy, Young Andy, Cinnabar, Mike Aha on Jarhead, Ivan on his New no name Whaler (nice) and alot more friends Trolling and Mooching in the area. We decided to fish the towers for Rocks and Lings as the action for salmon was pretty bad. We met up with Young Andy and Bruce on Cinnabar. We ended up with a couple of good size Ling Cods and Rock fish for the day. We decided to go back and try again for salmon and trolled from Duxbury back to Muir beach without one single hit. Guess the Salmon Gods didn't hear us today! But at least we weren't fishless. We picked up and headed to Point Bonita to try for anything on the way in. We came into fog and cold wind and chop coming around the point. Mike (Jarhead) was at the cliff house trying for Butts, but no luck at his end. We fished till 5:30pm and called it a day after all the Nudies decided to dress up and go home. Ride in was even worse than friday and we were getting soaked till the bay bridge (be careful at pier 32, there's a naval patrol boat chasing people away from a ship docked there and they mean business). By the time we hit Oyster Point we were dead. We flushed the motor and parked the boat in the garage when we got home, didn't even have the strength to wash it we were so tired. Will try for halibut next weekend as the bite was great both Fri and Sat while we were salmon fishing. Tuna was going on at the Guide and Seamount as we could hear them on the radio.
